Why I've Never Had Goals (Until Now)

Turning 25 didn't come with a rule book. I've been waiting for a few months for some kind of epiphany or kismet life event that would somehow propel my life into a definite, material direction.

To my knowledge, it hasn't happened yet.

This has got me thinking about goals and goal making. I've never been big on goals. I admire goal makers for sure, but I've always been more of a go-with-the-flow type of person. Things happen, man. Plans change. Emergencies and other life-altering events occur. My life has had no shortage of any of these. But than again, neither has anyone else's.

My life at this point is in a constant state of existential crisis. I have way to much time on my hands and I think. And think. And think s'more. Whilst thinking, here are some excuses for why I don't make goals:

I rarely accomplish goals I've previously made. I have trouble with follow through. I'm an ideas man! I enjoy creating things. If you look at any previous blogs I've made, I have consistency issues and I tire quickly of things. It's really a sickness.

I believe in God. What has this got to do with my setting goals? I believe God has an ultimate plan for my life. Why should I make any plans of my own? It's all in His hands, right? Right.

I don't know what I want. This kind of harkens back to my second point. I'm pretty much ecstatic with the opportunities and great things that have randomly happened in my life. Why mess with it when it's working so well?

But it's not working anymore! I'm kind of floating around. I have a job and I'm on a diet (again), but I'm not really working toward anything.  In my desperation, I literally Google'd "goals you should hit by the time you're 25." The search yielded mastering a recipe that does not originate in a box, having a savings and considering a change in professions to something worthwhile.

These are all understandable. These are all relatively attainable.

So after some thinking and searching up Pinterest on how to make goals (I know, I know) I am proud to announce goals I have decided to make for the latter half of 2016:

Personal:

Lose 20 pounds. Cause I can!

Get my driver's license. I know, at 25 I'm reaching Spongebob status.I DONE DID IT!--Updated 7/23/17

Work out 3 times twice a week.

Professional:
Work on one blog post every 2 weeks. Lucky you!

Enter a writing contest. Missed NaNoWriMo :(

Look up a writer's conference. I can't commit to attending one. But looking them up is a good start.

Finances:
Do one of those Pinterest "Save up for your dream trip" charts.

Big goals:

Contribute to my household more consistently.

Be a better aunty.

Write down research I've been doing. More on that later ;)

That's it for now!

P.S. my excuse about believing in God as being a reason why I don't set goals is a cop-out. He's all about goals!

Ten Things About Me (The Inaugural List)

I'm going to start this off with 10 things about me, random and otherwise.

1. I'm 26. Yeeeikes.
The whole transition into my "mid-twenties" is a thing! I'm definitely not where I thought I would be ten years ago. Or five years ago. Not even three years ago. Actress, writer, some kind of musician (though I don't play an instrument) were all on my list. I know in the greater scheme of things I feel I am exactly where I need to be, But I will never get used to the thought of being in my mid-twenties. Ugh.

2. I'm living at home. There's a word for Millennials that are  still living or return home to live with their parents...the word escapes me. No, it's not "sad," "loser," or "parasite." Though being a quarter of a century old and continuing to live at home would make the previous terms at least feel true, I am not alone as far as staying in the nest. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center for the first time since the 1880's young adults were a little more likely to live at home that with a spouse or romantic partner. I however fall into the demographic with the opposite of my sex, as this trend is rising among young men. I'm feeling you, bro!

3. I am employed.
I work for a synagogue. I am not Jewish. Things about it will show up in future lists. Stay tuned!

4. Jesus is my homeboy--I have a poster that says so!
In all seriousness, my faith has brought me through A LOT and also will show up in future lists. Though my beliefs are not necessarily conventional, they're pretty darn biblical. My understanding of God is a huge part of my life and my outlook.

5. I've never dated.
If nothing works out by the time I'm 30, I'm signing up for Christian Mingle! #NerdyThirty #FindGodsMatchIn5Years

6. I get the privilege of helping raise 2 magnificent kids.
There's soooo many great and not so great things about being part of a village that's bringing up one much less TWO keiki. But at the end of the day it's always worth it.

7. Born and raised in HI.

Another of my life's privileges. I love where I live, but like anywhere else it has it's troubles.

Spongebob knows how to adult!
8. I love airports, air planes and turbulence.
I can count on my hand the number of trips I've taken to the mainland. When I do get to travel, I'm loving every second of it. I can't wait to go somewhere else!

9.  I'm having trouble being a grown up.
Oh so much. So so so much. Adulting, man. It's difficult.

10. I'm writing a blog about my life in lists!
This whole project may be in direct correlation with #1. I'm excited to share what I know/seen/have heard!
